This haiku was inspired by a grove of four ginkgo trees visible from my fifth story office window. The trees were an 1888 gift from a missionary to Dr. Henry Foster, head and founder of the Clifton Springs Sanitarium. (After the Sanitarium building was abandoned in favor of a newly constructed hospital, the 1896 building was converted into senior housing.)

Ginkgos emerged some 290 million years ago. Ginkgo biloba is the sole surviving ginkgo species. The trees are resistant to disease and parasites, and they can live for hundreds of years. Their fan-shaped leaves are unique.
