Sara’s Birthday

by Lionel E. Deimel

Once more, the earth has ringed the sun

And brought to us a new July,

Before whose course is yet half-run,

We’ll have excuse to versify.

A birthday we will celebrate

In honor of our Sara fair;

The thirteenth is the very date

On which we’ll say a birthday prayer:

May God watch over our dear Sara;

May life get better every day;

May she sun on the Riviera

When she’s not freezing in PA!

Not every poem can be a great work of art. This poem was simply written to accompany a birthday gift for my daughter-in-law. My primary objective was to rhyme “Sara” with something somewhere within the poem. The reader can infer most of the facts alluded to in the poem: Sara’s birthday is July 13, and she lives in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, which tends to have chilly winters.

The poem was completed on July 11, 2011.
