I have written a rare follow-up to my last blog post, “Mistaken Primate.”
Some may think my criticism of Rowan Williams’ priorities rather picky. In “Another Take on Rowan’s Thinking,“ on the other hand, I direct readers to an essay
by Savitri Hensman, who has a rather more devastating example of the odd
priorities of the Archbishop of Canterbury to offer readers. Hensman knows how
to go for the jugular.

Ruth Gledhill recently made public letters from Rowan Williams from when he
was Archbishop of Wales. The correspondence revealed that, after much study,
Williams concluded that the Bible does not refer to the kind of homosexual
relationships widely seen as acceptable by Episcopalians. Archbishop of
Canterbury Rowan Williams has never repudiated his views on homosexuality,
though he has said that he would put them aside for the sake of the Anglican
Communion.

Last week, Williams issued an explanation of his position regarding the views
expressed in the letters. My latest blog post, “Mistaken Primate,” analyzes his
two-paragraph statement and concludes that the Archbishop of Canterbury is
confused. You can read my analysis at

I have been thinking about when the House of Bishops might get around to
voting to depose Bishop of Pittsburgh Robert Duncan. I have also been

Yet again, there is activity on the legal front. Bishop Robert Duncan’s legal

Please indulge me in using this list for an occasional message not directly
related to Lionel Deimel’s Web Log. I thought subscribers would be interested in
a video just posted on
Parish Toolbox by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The video is called “An Open

though perhaps not with quite the same venom, as the infamous “Choose

personality cult of the incumbent bishop. Make what you will of this 10-minute

It is time for Progressive Episcopalians of Pittsburgh to send out its annual
membership-renewal letter, and the occasion gave me reason to look at past
letters. My latest blog post, “The more things change …” reprints the
letter we sent members in August 2005. So little seems to have changed since
then! Reactionary forces within Anglicanism continue to advance their program,
and PEP continues to oppose it. You can read both my brief commentary and the
actual 2005 letter at

Many have urged Anglicans to pray for our bishops who are attending the 2008
Lambeth Conference. An essay by Douglas LeBlanc at Episcopal Life Online,
however, made me think that we should pray for the reporters at the conference
and should pray that our bishops make the task of journalists a meaningful one.
This led me to write a collect for the 2008 Lambeth Conference. The collect is
part of my latest blog post, “A Collect for Lambeth.” You can read my essay and

Calvary Church returned to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas
yesterday. Its attorney filed papers asking that the court appoint a “monitor”
to account for and to oversee property of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
The court papers also ask Judge James to allow parishes to pay their assessments
into escrow accounts, rather than to the diocese, where they might be used to
undermine The Episcopal Church. All this is described in my latest blog post,
“Calvary’s Cavalry Again Rides to the Rescue,” which includes quotations from
and a link to the new filing. You can read my post at

Pittsburgh Episcopalians, in a group informally calling itself “Across the
Aisle,” are planning for a reorganized Diocese of Pittsburgh should, as seems
likely, the diocese be “realigned” in October. What will this diocese look like,
or, perhaps more appropriately, how will it address the job it has to do? In my
latest blog post, “Whither Pittsburgh,” I suggest the kind of objectives the
reorganized diocese will likely subscribe to. In the process, I tell the story
of how people from both sides of the aisle, liberals and conservatives, came to
talk and work together. This did not happen in San Joaquin until after
the diocese voted to join the Southern Cone. We hope that the fact that people
of diverse theological views are talking about their common future before
schism will make the transition to new leadership in the Diocese of Pittsburgh a
smoother process. You can read my post at

Presumably, this legal move is intended to facilitate removing property from The Episcopal Church.
