Dear No Anglican Covenant Coalition Supporter,

The General Convention of The Episcopal Church convenes in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 5. Among the items on the agenda is the church’s response to the request to adopt the Anglican Covenant. It is generally conceded that the governing body of The Episcopal Church has little enthusiasm for adopting the Covenant, but the General Convention has, in the past, had a hard time saying a definitive “no” to the Communion.

We believe that it is important that the American church reject the Covenant unambiguously. Some have declared the Covenant dead, but it is not dead for those churches that have already adopted it. We believe that a rejection by The Episcopal Church will discourage future adoptions. It is our hope that a clear rejection will raise questions about the whole Covenant project, particularly after the defeat of the Covenant by Church of England dioceses and its rejection by the General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

The No Anglican Covenant Coalition will be sending two non-deputies to the General Convention. Malcolm French and I will be lobbying for the church to take a strong stand against the Covenant, while as strongly affirming our support of the Anglican Communion. We will be distributing buttons and brochures, and we will be talking to whoever will listen to us. And, of course, we will work closely with those who share our concerns about the Covenant.
